How to Select an Appropriate Lifting Sling

It is crucial to select the lifting sling based on the actual situation and conditions. Different working environments require the use of distinct slings. Furthermore, depending on the material of the sling, there are various types available, including nylon lifting slings, polyester lifting slings, chain lifting slings, and wire rope lifting slings.

Nylon lifting sling

Nylon lifting slings have become a popular choice due to their versatility and durability. Unlike other materials, nylon web slings are impervious to petroleum-based substances such as grease and oil. Furthermore, nylon slings exhibit resilience against specific chemicals, including ethers, strong alkalies, and aldehydes. However, it is crucial to note that nylon webbing is not suitable for applications involving bleaching agents or acids, nor for use in temperatures exceeding 194°F (90°C). Additionally, nylon has a stretch capacity of approximately 8-10%, thus it is advisable to avoid its usage in scenarios where elongation is undesired.

Polyester lifting sling

Similar to nylon lifting straps, polyester round slings also come with temperature recommendations and are not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding 194 degrees Fahrenheit (90 degrees Celsius). Unlike nylon, polyester slings stretch by approximately 3% of their rated capacity. Additionally, polyester round slings can withstand acidic environments as the fabric is resistant to bleaching agents and common acids. However, it is advisable to avoid using polyester webbing in contact with sulfuric acids or alkaline solutions.

Chain lifting sling

Chain lifting slings are perfectly suited for demanding environments and tasks, as they exhibit resilience against abrasions and cutting, maintaining their durability and integrity even in extreme temperatures reaching up to 400°F (204°C). Typically constructed from Grade 80 steel, chain slings can also be customized upon request with Grade 100 chain, which offers approximately 25% higher strength for lifting applications while maintaining a lighter weight than traditional Grade 80 chains. This added strength, along with the customization options, allows chain slings to adapt to nearly any lifting scenario. It’s worth noting, however, that chain hoists can be costly, and prices may fluctuate based on market conditions.

Wire rope slings

Wire rope slings share similarities with chain slings in terms of their excellent durability, strength, and resistance to high temperatures. However, wire rope is more cost-effective than chain, making it an ideal choice when budget is a consideration. The abrasion resistance and flexibility of wire rope can vary depending on its configuration, allowing for the production of chain slings utilizing specific types of wire rope. Typically, wire rope is constructed from either 6×19 or 6×37 rope classes. The 6×19 class is the most widely utilized due to its optimal balance of flexibility and abrasion resistance. In contrast, the 6×37 class offers greater flexibility but reduced abrasion resistance.
